Finger Lakes SPCA Foster Program

Think you’d like to foster animals in need in your home? You can make an immediate and lasting impact on the life of a homeless pet as a Foster Care Volunteer with Finger Lakes SPCA. Animals may need foster care for many reasons, and temporarily opening your home saves lives. Foster care offers the one-on-one attention and loving comfort that only a home setting can offer, precisely what some animals need to heal and grow. As a foster care volunteer, you may host animals with special medical or behavioral needs, mother animals with nursing litters, or underage animals who need special feeding and socialization, like puppies or kittens.

Foster FAQ

Yes! FLSPCA provides our foster volunteers with all the necessary supplies they’ll need to care for the animal they agree to foster. The only thing we ask our foster care volunteers to provide is a loving home!
This varies based on the animal. We will always provide an estimated length of time that the animal needs to be in the foster home.
We understand that life happens. If you need to return your foster animal to us earlier than expected, just let us know! There is no judgment; we are thankful for any amount of time you help an animal stay out of the shelter environment.
It can be. Foster care volunteers definitely need the ability to say goodbye, but we will help you as we send pets off to their new adoptive homes. Each adoption saves a life, but a great foster care volunteer can save many lives by socializing and rehabilitating pets who need a little extra time and care to be ready for new homes.
If you decide you’d like to adopt your foster animal, that’s wonderful! Let us know and we’ll guide you through the next steps.
Yes! You know your foster animal best. If you think they’d be a great addition to a person or family that you know, just let us know! We’ll connect with them to see if it’s a good match.
This is the tricky part. You will need to provide a space that is completely separate from the other animals in your home. Please do not mix the animals without consultation with our shelter staff.
